A first-person shooter video game called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was created by Infinity Ward and released by Activision in 2007. The fourth major Call of Duty game is now available. The game deviates from previous entries' World War II settings by taking place in the present. Modern Warfare was created for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows and published in November 2007 for those platforms. In 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Reflex Edition was released on the Wii.

First-person shooter Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a genre. A character can choose one of three stances—standing, crouched, or prone—each of which has a different impact on the character's speed, accuracy, and stealth. The player can evade enemy fire or regain health after taking a lot of damage by using cover. Therefore, there are no health or armor power-ups. The character's heartbeat quickens and the borders of the screen flash red after they have been damaged. The character can recover if they avoid being burned. A marking that shows the direction of a live grenade when the character is within its blast radius allows the player to either run or throw the grenade back at the attacker.

On a variety of maps, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare offers team-based and deathmatch multiplayer modes. Each mode has a goal that must be accomplished through a different set of tactics. When they kill three, five, or seven enemies consecutively, players can call in UAV reconnaissance scans, airstrikes, and assault helicopters. When the allocated time has passed or a team or player reaches a certain amount of points, the game is over, and the team or player with the most points wins. When the timer runs out and the scores are tied, Sudden Death mode kicks in. In this mode, there is no respawning and the winning team is the one with the last man standing or the team that completes the goal first.
